In today’s episode, Kaitlyn and Zea will be discussing yoga and how it can improve mental health. Yoga is a form of fitness that involves physical, mental, and spiritual practices. Our guest speaker to help us explore today’s topic is Diana Coad, an adjunct professor at High Point University who teaches yoga

 

In the fast-paced environment of our society, stress and anxiety are extremely prevalent which is why finding ways to nurture our mind is crucial.  In modern terms within society, “Yoga" frequently is associated with a form of exercise or a way to stretch sore muscles. Kaitlyn and Zea will be joined by Diana Coad, in our very first episode, to prove how yoga is so much more than just a test of flexibility.


“Everybody and Every Body Can Do Yoga”

These words were some of the most substantial words of wisdom from Coad’s episode. This is important to note and emphasize how this accessible “treatment” is not one size fits all. While yoga is a great form of physical fitness and requires physical intention, it also can be a form of “fitness” for our mental and spiritual “body”.  Some may discard implementing yoga due to self-doubt of ability or “not fit enough” but yoga's adaptability allows it to be accessible to all due to the variety of types.


Creating Harmony in the Mind, Body, & Soul

So how exactly does it do so? Diana was able to go in-depth about different aspects of yoga and what exactly they are doing to help our mental health. Yoga is a craft that can allow space to create harmony between the mind and the body through physical movement. This is why yoga can bring us a sense of relief in moments of stress which is one of the highlighted components within yoga's contribution to bettering mental and spiritual well-being. So where exactly is yoga coming into play you may be wondering? Yoga can be a holistic alternative and medication for many different realms of mental health. Benefits can vary from better sleep and reduced stress and anxiety to improving self-awareness and a sense of well-being and promoting physical strength.

 

Yoga is more than just physical

Yoga is more than just a workout; it's a practice of self-care and self-discovery. By dedicating time to nurturing their bodies and minds, individuals develop a deeper sense of self-awareness, resilience, and self-compassion. This self-care practice extends beyond the yoga mat, empowering individuals to make healthier choices and prioritize their well-being in all areas of life.
